ABOUT SUZY HOOD...

Suzy married her junior high school sweetheart on her 17th birthday, and though pretty much raised in
Columbus, GA, she moved to Phenix City, AL when her children were small.  Her husband was from a musical
family and had always been a guitar player, always playing  in southern gospel groups.  She has two daughters,
ages 32, and 29.  The youngest sang in church and has a wonderful singing voice.  When her children went off
to college, one day Suzy just sat and wondered if she had been in the wrong line when God was passing out
talent.

Everyone had always turned to Suzy to decorate their homes and offices, pick out their paint colors, accessories
and furniture.   She knew she had an eye for color, but was that a talent?  Her friends and family sure thought
so.  As a result, she reluctantly began taking a few continuing education art classes.  Luckily, her first instructor
was a wonderful local artist named Frenasee Rathel Daughty.  She says she felt so embarrassed when she
asked each one on the first night, why we were here?  Suzy told her that a lot of my family was talented and that
she must have some hidden talent somewhere and thought she might find it in art.  The encouragement she
received from her was instrumental in her finding her own style of art.

Frenee said that there are different techniques and styles of art, and different people do things in different ways,
that there was not a “wrong” way to be an artist.  She encouraged Suzy to take classes and workshops from
different artists and find a small piece of something each did to combine it into something she likes to call her
own style.

Though Suzy felt at a disadvantage having no formal training and beginning to paint when she was “over the
hill”, she kept taking classes and workshops from various local artists, and is still learning that each time you
watch someone paint, you learn something new.

She realized that the art world was not a competition; artists are genuinely willing to help by sharing ideas,
perspectives and techniques that have made them successful in their own way.

Suzy is currently a member of the Joseph House Art Gallery, where she serves on the Board of Directors and is
the Gallery Director for the facility, and also exhibits at the Front Porch Gallery.

She is a member of the Columbus Artists’ Guild, participating in their annual members’ show, where she won a
Third Place Ribbon and monetary award in the 2007 Exhibit.
