SUZI KAHLER

Suzi has been painting and drawing for as long as she could walk, talk, and hold a brush.  She decided at the
age of 2 ½ to take on the task of remodeling the family bathroom by painting the toilet seat a lovely shade of
green,  with house paint.  After this event, her mother introduced her to paper and crayons, which eventually
led to oil painting lessons by age eight.

Suzi obtained a B.A. in Art, with a studio concentration in painting from Northern Kentucky University in 1987.
After graduation, she married Drew, now her husband of 19 years, and settled in and fell in love with
Columbus, GA.  She went on to study Counseling, receiving a M.S. in Counseling and Human Development
from Troy State University in 199 and has worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor since.  Suzi managed
to find a little time here and there to keep up with art, but decided to energetically pursue a second career as
an artist in 2005.

A few significant events occurred prior to 2005 that led Suzi back to art.  A close friend referred the daughter
of another friend to Suzi, so that Suzi could teach her how to oil paint.  This young lady had decided to learn
oil painting, and to make paintings representing four different painting styles for her Senior Project at
Columbus High School.  This led Suzi to pick up her brushes again.  In less than a year, she decided to leave
a demanding position as the Program Administrator of a behavioral health care agency to take a clinical
position at a local nonprofit agency.  Suzi has grown so used to working 50 hours a week, and being on call
24/7, that she began “thinking about art” for the first time since 1992.

In 2005, with the support  and encouragement if her husband and several friends, Suzi began to paint again.
Her paintings reflect her desire to capture the color, energy, and movement in the world around her.  Suzi’s
style has evolved over the years, often combining the elements of photo-realism, impressionism, Post-
Impressionism, and abstraction.  She likes to experiment with various subjects, but maintains a deep love for
depicting nature scenes and landscapes.  She likes to paint I many media, including oils, watercolors, acrylics,
and inks.  When in her undergraduate art program at Northern Kentucky University, Suzi was noted in
Cincinnati Magazine in 1987 as “an artist to watch” after an art critic wrote about her Senior Show.

Suzi has a strong interest in the community, and maintains involvement in several nonprofit organizations in
the greater Columbus area.  She is proud of Columbus, and is amazed every day at the generosity and caring
spirit of the people she meets in her work with these organizations.

Suzi exhibits her work at the Front Porch and the Joseph House Gallery.  She has received awards and
recognition for her work in 2007 at Arts on the River and at the Columbus Artists’ Guild Annual Show.  She has
a room set aside in her home for painting that is “off limits”  to her cats.  She lives in Fortson, Georgia with her
husband Drew, and has been adopted by several cats.
